Apprentice Allowance

An apprentice allowance is a reduction in the weight assigned to a horse when it is ridden by an apprentice jockey. Carried weight is the load a horse is required to bear through the jockey and equipment during a race. In Korean racing information, the relevant official designation is the Korean term for “apprentice jockey,” so that status is the one to look for on the card.

What is being reduced?

The allowance applies to carried weight, not to the horse’s own body weight. An allowance symbol on a race card therefore does not mean the horse’s build or physical condition has changed. It helps explain the weight the horse will actually carry in that race.

The system is intended to support riding opportunities for apprentices. The eligibility rules and size of any reduction must be checked in the official information for the race. The term alone is not enough to infer either whether an allowance applies or how large it is.

How to read it on a race card

First check the jockey’s name and apprentice status. Then read the horse’s assigned weight together with any allowance notation. If you compare the entry with an earlier race, also check whether the jockey and race conditions have changed. This helps distinguish an apprentice allowance from a weight difference caused by other conditions.

A common misunderstanding

Receiving an allowance does not guarantee a better result. Carried weight is only one part of the race, alongside distance, track condition, the field, and how the contest develops. Treat the allowance as one item in the published conditions rather than as a prediction of ability or finishing position.
