Catch Weight

Catch weight is a carried weight arranged separately when the race conditions have not specified the load in advance. The term does not suggest that the horse’s body weight can change arbitrarily. It describes a situation in which the carried-weight condition was not fixed beforehand.

How does it differ from carried weight generally?

Carried weight is the broad term for the load a horse is assigned to bear in a race. Catch weight is a particular way of setting that load when no weight has been stated in the conditions. The two ideas are therefore not unrelated: one is the general category, while the other describes a specific circumstance within it.

Where is the term used?

The Korean racing glossary describes catch weight as being arranged shortly before a race and says it is currently used in match races. A match race is a contest involving a limited set of opponents. Actual use and detailed procedures still depend on the race conditions, so the definition should not be used to guess a particular runner’s assignment.

A common misunderstanding

“Catch weight” can sound as though the figure is chosen on the spot without any basis. Its essential meaning is simply that the carried weight was not written into the conditions in advance.
